What HESI A2 Score Do You Need?

Score requirements vary significantly by program. Here are benchmarks for common program types.

70–75%
Minimum to Apply

Most ADN and LPN programs set the floor here. Scoring at the minimum is risky — many programs rank applicants by score.

75–85%
Competitive

The range where most admitted students score. Aim here to be competitive at the majority of BSN and ADN programs.

85%+
Highly Competitive

Required for top BSN programs and competitive urban hospitals with direct-entry programs. A&P and science sections are decisive here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sections are on the HESI A2?
The HESI A2 has 8 sections: Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary & General Knowledge, Grammar, Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, and Physics. Most programs require 5–7 sections. Check your specific program to know which sections you need.
How is the HESI A2 scored?
Each section is scored from 0–100%. Your composite score is the average of your required sections. Most programs set a minimum composite score (typically 75–80%) and may also have per-section minimums.
What is the hardest section of the HESI A2?
Most students find Anatomy & Physiology and Chemistry to be the most challenging sections, especially if they haven't taken these courses recently. Math is also difficult for students who are rusty on dosage calculations and unit conversions.
Is the HESI A2 harder than the TEAS?
They test similar content but have different strengths. The HESI A2 goes deeper into Chemistry and Physics. The TEAS covers Scientific Reasoning more broadly. Most students find whichever they studied less for to be harder. If your program accepts either, choose based on your science background.
How many times can I take the HESI A2?
Most programs allow 2–3 attempts per application cycle with a mandatory waiting period (usually 60 days) between attempts. Some programs average scores; others take the highest. Always check your program's specific policy.
